Fire report from NLFR Captain Jim Kusz

The Rodeway Inn & Suites at 1070 SE 1st Street (directly across Highway 101 from the D-River Wayside) in Lincoln City reported a chimney fire in one of the rooms at approximately 8:40 p.m. Sunday night, February 28th. North Lincoln Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the scene and within moment’s three engines, an aerial truck, a heavy rescue, and over 20 volunteer firefighters arrived to the scene.

The firefighters managed to extinguish the fire within an hour and contained it to two units of the hotel however, flames had severely damaged a large portion of the roof, and water damaged several units on the second story.

An additional ladder truck was called in from Newport Fire to assist North Lincoln Fire’s 100′ aerial unit with roof operations. Additional engines from Nestucca Rural Fire and Depoe Bay Fire assisted in suppression efforts as well.

A fire in the fireplace was the cause of the blaze that rapidly vented through the roof of the third floor unit. The 44 unit hotel is closed until further notice, however several businesses that share the structure on the first floor are all expected to open today.

Early damage estimates range near half a million dollars. No one was injured during the event and guests had been moved to a neighboring hotel for the night.
