Cape Kiwanda has taken another life this Winter. The Coast Guard says a number of young people were hiking the cape Sunday when three of them fell over a drop-off and into the water below. The Coast Guard says they launched a helicopter from Astoria and a 47-foot motorlifeboat from Depoe Bay. When the helicopter got on scene they were looking down at 13-foot waves near shore. Yet they managed to rescue two of the three victims. The third victim, a 19 year old male, was spotted face down in the water. Efforts to revive him were not successful.
Cape Kiwanda took the life of a 17 year old Maryville, Washington girl recently. She also fell down a long escarpment to the sea below.
