After assessing the Hwy 101 slide, just south of Heceta Head, ODOT now says Highway 101 will remain closed until further notice. They have a lot of assessing to do above the slide area to gauge whether the cliffs above the highway are stable.
The slide rumbled down the mountainside shortly after 12 noon Sunday at a spot where construction crews were re-fortifying a retaining wall. ODOT has set up electronic signs at Waldport and Florence for travelers to bypass this part of the coast by heading inland on Highway 126 from Florence (south of the slide) and on Highway 34 at Waldport (north of the slide).
8pm Update from ODOT
U.S. 101 will be closed at milepost 178 through Sunday night and into Monday following a landslide just north of Sea Lion Caves and south of the Cape Creek Tunnel, 11 miles north of Florence. ODOT crews will be working through the night to clear the roadway, but cannot safely open to traffic until debris remaining on the hillside is cleared in daylight to ensure slope stability and safety for travelers. Expect that the road may be closed throughout Monday as well and check Tripcheck.com before attempting to travel through the area. Travelers are advised to take alternate routes.
