In an abrupt break with normal procedure, Oregon republicans in the State Senate have abandoned the capitol in order to shut down the Senate rather than allow democrats to pass legislation they oppose – a rough parallel to what’s happening in the U.S. Senate as leadership there refuses to conduct a hearing process to consider a replacement for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Republicans are increasingly drawing lines in the sand which they defy their political opponents to force them to do anything about what they call unacceptable legislation despite a majority of lawmakers favoring it or clear language in the U.S. Constitution.
