As work continues on Newport’s new, quite upgraded Aquatic Center next to the Recreation Center behind City Hall, all eyes on the city’s Parks and Recreation Committee are now turning to the soon-to-be-abandoned old pool just east of Sam Case Elementary School, on the edge of Forest Park.
The committee, now chaired by long time Parks Committee member Nancy Steinberg, discussed the probable fate of the old pool, assuming that it is eventually demolished. Since the committee and most of the town probably envisions a “re-purposing” of the site, demolition is likely within a year or so of the switch-over to the new Aquatic Center. Discussions mentioned transforming the old facility site into a welcomed amenity to Forest Park. Right now the path that runs down to the creek and up the other side is about it. So they’re talking about creating a covered gazebo type ‘lodge’ and envision using some of the old pool’s huge wooden “glu-lam” beams as major components of the new structure. Again – just an idea. More discussions are sure to come.
