Well, well…what have we here!? Gas for under two bucks! Does that mean the coast will start to see gas prices that are more in line with neighboring areas?
Not on your life.
While gas prices have just barely fallen under two dollars in Newport, they’ve fallen to $1.47 in Florence (where they have a Fred Meyer). Almost pays to commute to work in Florence (which more than a few Lincoln County residents do). So Lincoln County locals still pay fifty cents more a gallon than in West Lane County which is farther from the oil terminals in Portland. Coos Bay is $1.55 a gallon.
So when you’re pumping $1.97 gas thinking that suspiciously high gas prices might moderate – think again. The state Department of Justice says the oil companies are not gouging. And they say it without saying why.
Newport is paying the same gas prices as in Burns, OR. There, you gotta buy gas to get out of town or just pass through. In Newport and Lincoln City, tourists come to the coast and HAVE to buy gas to get home. When they’re gone, the locals – among the lowest wages earners in the state – get stuck with paying among the highest prices anywhere in Oregon.
By the way, Newport’s local gas tax is 3-cents a gallon.
