Girl Still Missing, Rescuers Injured in Search at Cape Kiwanda
Pacific City: Several rescue agencies responded to a report of a teen age girl who fell into the ocean at Cape Kiwanda Sunday. Reports say the girl fell off a cliff at about 3pm, and disappeared. Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received a 911 relay call at 3:06 p.m. from a 16-year-old girl who reported her friend had fallen into the water while they were hiking along the cove north of the cape.
Coast Guard helicopters Astoria and Newport along with a 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Station Tillamook Bay responded to search for the missing girl. Two rescue jet ski searchers from North Lincoln also joined in the search.
Soon into the search seas began to rise considerably. A large wave overwhelmed the two jet skiers and knocked them both into the water. They were hoisted to safety by one of the Coast Guard choppers. Both were taken to hospitals to be checked out. Both were later released.
The search is continuing today under more favorable conditions.
