The OCCA Board of Directors is pleased to recognize the Performing Arts Center Resident Artist Teams, also known as the PAC RATs, as Community Legends. Over the past 27 years our local performing artists have performed and supported the PAC. What an amazing contribution they have made to the quality of life in our community. The opportunities each company has given to the participants and audiences, is awesome and enviable of most other communities. The success of the Performing Arts Center and its gift to the greater community is a direct result of the energy, creativity, and community minded efforts of each of the 12 presenting companies that regularly perform at the facility.

Community Legends are chosen from the following criteria: (1) contributions of volunteerism, (2) involvement in many community activities and organizations (3) activity over a period of time. Since the opening celebration of the Newport Performing Arts Center in 1988, the PAC RATs have presented over five thousand performances, which represent tens of thousands of volunteer hours and countless opportunities to the performing artists in the community to be “on stage” and “behind the scenes.” The OCCA Board is proud of the economic and social impact the PAC has had, and the legacy it has created. Now is the time to celebrate the individuals that each of these 12 organizations choses to recognize as “legends” within their ranks.

The Community Legends Celebration will take place on Saturday evening, February 27, 2016 at the Newport Performing Arts Center. The seashore themed celebration titled “The Academy of PAC RATs Silver Sand Dollar Awards” will consist of two ticketed segments with a no-host Piano Sandbar and Tide Pool Forage from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. The reception and appetizers will be followed by the “PAC RATs Academy Silver Sand Dollar Awards” at 7:00 p.m., which will showcase each presenting group and honor their legends with “Silver Sand Dollar Awards”. This will be a fun-filled evening designed to honor the past and present movers and shakers that have made the PAC what it is today. While the PAC is 27 years old, many of the companies had their roots well established prior to that- so be prepared to hear the “legends” of the Naterlin Community Center and beyond!

The resident artist teams include: Central Coast Chorale, Coastal Act Productions, International Film Series, Newport Symphony Orchestra, New Vision Arts, Oregon Coastalaires, Oregon Coast Ballet Company, Oregon Music Teachers Association, Pacific Dance Ensemble, Porthole Players Ltd., Red Octopus Theatre Company, and TJ Hoofers.

On the average, the PAC is home to over 170 performances each year, with 26,275 attendees, and 790 participants on stage and back-stage. Over the last 27 years more than 517,000 people have attended ticketed performances. Another 117,500 people have experienced the arts through rehearsals, school shows, community events, regional and statewide music festivals, workshops, and meetings. All of the resident companies provide a vast compliment of opportunities for hands-on learning and participation in the performing arts to people of all ages.

OCCA Community Legends to date: Alice Silverman (2001), William McKevitt (2002), Gene Morrow & Bob Spangler (2003), Jean Barker (2004), Donald A Davis (2005), Dr Lavern Weber (2006), Pat Grimstad (2007), Ramona Martin (2008), John Baker (2009), Lee Morrison and Jeanne Cloe (2010), Steve & Marian Brown (2011), Burt & Bobbi Lippman (2012), Rick Bartow (2013), Bob Jacobson (2014), None (2015), PAC RAT Legends to be listed after the celebration on February 27, 2016.
