A Newport man was arrested over the weekend for driving drunk. Not only was John Nason driving drunk, but while driving south along Highway 101 through Newport, his van ran up onto the sidewalk, hit a tree, a light pole, and then a fire hydrant. He then drove back onto the pavement at the intersection of 101 and Hurbert where he parked it.
When police arrived on scene they said they found Nason sitting on the sidewalk, obviously very intoxicated. When they started talking with him police say he passed out.
Medics were called and Nason was transported to the hospital where he he awakened. He was checked out, determined to be very intoxicated and was released to police who then took him to jail. There he was booked for Drunk Driver, Driving While License Suspended, No insurance, Criminal Mischief and Reckless Driving. His bail was set at $37,500.
