OCCMS will present its next chamber music concert on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 3PM in the ocean- view home of Dick and Laurel Young in Depoe Bay. Internationally esteemed performers Kenji Bunch and Monica Ohuchi Bunch (appreciated by OCCMS audiences for their 2014 performance in The Thunder Egg Consort with Anthea Kreston and Jason Duckles of the Amelia Piano Trio) will perform as a viola and piano duo.
Composer and violist Kenji Bunch, a native of Oregon, has received worldwide acclaim from audiences, performers and critics alike for his unique brand of “New American” music which reflects his classical background and elements of Asian and American culture. He earned Bachelors and Masters of Music degrees at the Juilliard School and won the school’s highest honor-the William Schuman Prize for Outstanding Leadership in Music. His symphonic works have been performed by over 50 American orchestras, and his chamber works have been heard in major venues of six continents.
Pianist Monica Ohuchi Bunch made her orchestral debut at age ten with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra playing Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto. She is a distinguished Juilliard graduate and was hailed by the New York Times for her “commanding pianism.” Today Monica is an active and extolled international soloist, chamber musician, and piano educator who has performed to audiences in prestigious concert halls across the United States, Canada, Japan and Europe. She has been featured on television and radio broadcasts across the country. Colorado Symphony Conductor Jeffrey Kahane described her as ”a pianist of the first rank.” Her debut album, Monica’s Notebook with twelve etudes written for her by her husband Kenji, was released in May 2011 on Helicon Kleos Classical Records.
