A California school teacher, who once served on her local teachers’ union board, is now saying she wants to reserve what she claims is her right to not have money taken out of her paycheck to pay for union collective bargaining with school district administration.
Teacher Rebecca Friedrichs says compulsive deductions from her paycheck, without her approval, violates her First Amendment rights to free speech under the U.S. Constitution. A decision, by what has for a number of years been a very conservative Supreme Court, has teachers and other union members in the private sector as well quite nervous.
Union employment in the U.S. has fallen dramatically over the past twenty-five years, being eroded by legislation and regulations hostile to the union movement.
