Depoe Bay: Here we go again – Surf Rescue at Devil’s Punchbowl – Coast Guard rescues wave-tossed kayaker.
A call for help from a kayaker at Devil’s Punchbowl out the end of 1st Street, Otter Rock. Depoe Bay Fire-Rescue already rolling.
A kayaker reported has been flipped over and torn from his kayak in the surf. The man can be seen from the end of First Street clinging to an orange kayak. The kayaker is wearing a blue helmet. Coast Guard has been notified.
Kayaker now has lost his grip on his kayak which is now floating away. Man, in a blue wetsuit, is clinging to a rock on the side of the vertical cliffs at the end of First Street.
Depoe Bay Fire Rescue learns that it will take the Coast Guard Helo an hour to get to the scene. In light of that, the county rope rescue team has been paged out. Probably take a half hour to 45 minutes just to get enough rope rescuers on scene.
The kayaker is at the base of the cliff at the end of First Street. He is up on some rocks, out of the water.
First rope rescuers are preparing to throw the first rope over the side of the cliff. More rescuers just now leaving Newport to come help.
The Coast Guard stepped in and rescued the man. He’s now on dry land.
It’s the second mission for the Coast Guard Helo this weekend here locally. Yesterday a man hiking just north of Roads End on the top of the cliffs, took a tumble and broke his ankle when it was all over. The victim was airlifted to medics waiting at Chinook winds.
