Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward traveled to the Malheur National Wildlife Reserve Thursday in a demonstration that there has possibly been a lot more talking going on between the occupying vigilantes at Malheur NWR and “outside authorities” than has thus far been believed.
Both Sheriff Ward and vigilane leader Ammon Bundy shook hands and talked for a while, Sheriff Ward telling Bundy that he, Ward, was prepared to provide protected escort for he and his followers off the property and out of the county. Bundy declined. But he was also quoted as saying that they’d leave if “the people” want them to leave. But he didn’t specify which people would prompt such action.
However, despite high hopes that the end could near for the standoff, after the conversation with between Sheriff Ward and Bundy, Ward and his officers returned to their vehicles and left the area.
