Lincoln County District Attorney Michelle Branum told the news media Wednesday that no charges will be filed against two Newport Police officers involved in the shooting and wounding of a homeless man in front of the Agate Beach R/V Park on Highway 101 earlier this month. Branum said the officers were confronted by a hammer-wielding man with layers of clothing obscuring the view of what could have been objects of concern to the officers. They wound up trying to taze the man but the tazer probes couldn’t get through the man’s body through his thick clothing.
When the man took the hammer in his hand and refused to put it down one of the officers said the man lunged at him so he fired three shots at the man who then immediately collapsed on the shoulder of the road.
Branum announced at the beginning of the news conference that she would take no questions from the media.
The shooting victim is recovering from his wounds.
