New motor voter law kicks in January 1 – but not in time to get all new voters eligible for May election
Secretary of State Jeanne Atkins told news reporters this week that although Oregon’s pioneering “motor voter” program takes effect January first, it’ll take some time to get a huge backlog of DMV data loaded into the state’s computers. And there is an estimated 300,000 Oregonians who took out a driver’s license, renewed a driver’s license, registered a car – what have you – the upshot being those who were added since 2013 won’t be in the state’s database until after the upcoming May election. They won’t get to vote.
