The Eckman Creek culvert was put under the road a long time ago. But even though they couldn’t pin-point it they knew they were poking around in the right area. With every bucket of muck that came up, they knew they were getting closer.
Then! THEY FOUND IT!
Look bottom left in the photo, right on the end of the bucket and you can see the east end of a large culvert that gives Eckman Creek passage under Eckman Creek Road. It became clogged or blocked with debris coming down the creek as it makes its way downstream to the Alsea River. The blockage caused Eckman Creek to back up to where the creek was flowing over the top of Eckman Creek Road and weakening the road bed.
During the excavation both Cable TV and phone lines south of there were severed. No word on when they’ll be restored.
More stormy weather is coming ashore soon, so crews are packing up and will be back out at the next weather break.
