Highway 101 is now back to completely shut down just north of Agate Beach. Watch for flaggers. The investigation into the shooting of a hammer wielding suspect by Newport Police continues. The suspect was air lifted from the coast to a trauma center in Corvallis. No word on the severity of gun wound or wounds.
Oregon State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting after law enforcement responded to a call for service at a residence at the Agate Beach R/V Park. Unconfirmed reports say officers were confronted by a man waving a heavy hammer in the air and threatening officers. Again, unconfirmed reports say that the man approached the deputies with the hammer. Officers told him to drop it. He didn’t. Officers tazed him. Didn’t faze him. So officers, opened fire. One unconfirmed report indicated six shots.
The suspect was said to have a warrant out for his arrest from Multnomah County for indecent exposure. He was air lifted to a trauma center in Corvallis. It was not known whether his wounds were life threatening.
Because Newport Police was involved in the shooting, an outside agency does the investigation – especially in an officer-involved shooting.
Waiting for further details.
