A sailor out of Portland was trying to come into Newport from the sea early this morning, and just flat missed it. Instead of remembering the old “red-right-returning” buoy lights he went to far right and ended up getting snagged on the bottom just south of the south jetty at around 1am Monday morning.
Dave Ulrey and Tim Ulrey own the 35-footer. No word which was aboard. However, a male was taken off the boat soon after it beached. He was taken to PCH for treatment of hypothermia. No word on where he was coming from or where he was going. But he definitely missed the mouth of the jaws. As you can see his mast assembly came right down through the bottom of the boat. His electronics seems to have been whip-sawed pretty good. It won’t be cheap to fix the damage.
