Lincoln County Commissioners this week took note of the change of command aboard the NOAA Research Vessel Bell M. Shimada at NOAA’s Headquarters at South Beach this week, observing that NOAA continues to consolidate their Pacific Marine operations to their recently established headquarters at South Beach. Thompson said 70 jobs are now associated with the fleet headquarters itself not counting additional jobs associated with operating the dock complex. Commissioners said it’s their impression that this job growth will continue to some extent as NOAA consolidates certain aspects of their operations at the South Beach facility. Thompson said the the inflow of NOAA jobs at South Beach is certainly good news for Lincoln County.
An add-on to the recently voter-passed new hospital in Newport
County Commissioner Bill Hall reported that a consortium of drug and alcohol treatment teams in the community have convinced Samaritan Health Services that the recent voter-approved new hospital in Newport should include an in-patient drug and alcohol treatment center within the hospital complex. Hall said that Samaritan agrees the need is there and would properly be located within the new hospital campus but that the original design passed by the voters did not include such a facility. Hall said that negotiations are being launched to chart a way forward to create an inpatient drug and alcohol treatment center on the campus. So the next step will be to determine much such a facility will cost and where the money will come from.
Hall said meetings with Samaritan are already gearing up.
County Commissioners make it easier to locate a medical marijuana sales outlet at South Beach
County Commissioners this week amended county rules on where new medical marijuana outlets can be located outside city limits. The upshot is that new medical marijuana facilities can be established in South Beach closer to state parks than previously indicated. The new law says that marijuana facilities can now be located within 1,000 feet of a state park. The change was passed unanimously by the commission that paves the way for dispensaries to locate in areas that some earlier feared would be a bad influence on tourist families visiting a state park. But by buying medical marijuana well across Highway 101, in an industrial zoned area, it should reduce the likelihood of a child being exposed to such an operation.
