KYAQ-91.7FM, Lincoln County’s non-profit community radio station, is holding their annual Fall Membership Drive the week of Nov 9th through Nov 15. All week long, listeners can hear local people talking about interesting and informative issues, and each evening from 7 to 9 pm local musicians will perform live, on the air.
This is part of a big effort to greatly increase local programming on the station, which also carries many popular national programs, like Democracy Now with Amy Goodman, The Sierra Club, Ralph Nader, Alternative Radio with Lester Brown, David Pakman, and many more. The station also carries a variety of news programs, including the local news at 12 and 5 pm daily.
KYAQ, 91.7 FM, (and live streaming at KYAQ.org) has been broadcasting since January 2014. The station is a non-profit organization, staffed entirely by volunteers.
According to the organization’s official mission statement, “KYAQ is dedicated to advancing the common good of the Oregon Central Coast through the power of connection. Our mission is to strengthen the fabric of our community by weaving together vital threads of news, information, science, music, and art, creating an environment rich with surprise and discovery.”
To that end, local programming is being expanded to better serve the citizens of Lincoln County. Recently Toledo Mayor Billy Jo Smith and Councilor Julie Rockwell began Talk of Toledo, a weekly show airing every Wednesday at 12:30, to discuss issues relevant to the Toledo community. KYAQ staff are seeking to expand this kind of programming to include all Lincoln County communities.
Local musician and KYAQ Studio Engineer Bill Dalbey is working on a music program that will feature local musicians, also a highlight of the pledge drive. “There are so many great musicians in our area”, says Dalbey, “and this is a wonderful way to let more people hear their music. ”
Board Chairperson Franki Trujillo-Dalbey says “Thanks to our supporters, we are able to bring national and local information and entertainment to Lincoln County. This radio station exists because of our supporters, and together we can build a stronger, better informed community.”
