From Robert Whitman, Newport
Saw the ‘pro’ fluoride piece today and was “impressed” with the list of names and lots of initials after the names and titles. My research found only one from Newport, a couple from Corvallis, Portland, Lincoln City and Waldport. I understand these are experts but they are not going to have to pay for this decision. Newport tax payers and water users will.
Their demands that the council take immediate action on this issue is uncalled for. They say it’s a waste of money to put up to people to vote on, I say $300,000 is a waste of money since people can get fluoride other ways. We’ve survived 10 years without fluoride in drinking water, I think we can survive a little longer without it.
The vote in 1960 and 1962 passed by a very slim margin, 53 years later the residents of Newport should have a say on this issue. It’s our hard earned tax money that is going to be used, and higher water bills to be paid. All we ask for is a vote! It’s the American way when people disagree to have everyone have a say in the outcome and just not shove something down our throats!
A lot of people in Newport are not aware of this issue and should be given the opportunity to hear both sides and then make a choice. I was not aware of this until a neighbor brought it up one day while I was walking to mail box. I did some research on line, then attended council meeting Sept.8th. Both sides put their arguments before the council members. After listening to all the arguments, I felt only right way to go was to put it to the people for a vote.
PLEASE LET US VOTE`
