PORTLAND, Ore., October 12, 2015.–The American Red Cross is getting ready to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” during this week’s Great ShakeOut earthquake safety exercise.
On Thursday, Oct. 15, at 10:15am, nearly 400 Red Cross staff will participate in this important event to practice earthquake preparedness. The Red Cross encourages our volunteer network, business, and community partners–which represent thousands of individuals across the region–to participate. Community members are also urged to take part.
Governor Kate Brown has officially proclaimed Oct. 15 to be THE GREAT SHAKEOUT DAY, and already more than 500,000 Oregonians have registered for the event. Public participation will help to make Oregon more resilient in the aftermath of disaster. To register, visit http://www.shakeout.org
The Red Cross Cascades Region is also hosting our annual “selfie” event on Twitter. For the third year in a row, ShakeOut participants are encouraged to snap a photo of themselves during the exercise and tweet the image using the hashtag #ShakeOutSelfie and tagging @RedCrossCascade. Up to five “selfie” photos will be selected to receive Red Cross prizes so make your snapshot one that is creative, with a great facial expression and showing how likely you are to survive an earthquake.
The Great ShakeOut is an important reminder of the earthquake risk residents face in the Pacific Northwest and the need to prepare.
