Inaugural Roger and Lois Mills Learning Series event
Set for Oct. 21 in Newport
The Small Business Development Center at Oregon Coast Community College is proud to present the Roger and Lois Mills Learning Series of business education seminars. Talks planned for the series will cover a wide range of topics, from the future of Lincoln County, to a legislative update, to youth employment and much more. Future events will include some that focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math education, plus artist/maker issues, changes in business law, and crowd funding.
“The SBDC has many roles to play both in business education and economic development,” said Dave Price, Director of Small Business Development and Community Education at OCCC. “This year’s Small Business Management program is being led by Misty Lambrecht. The program consists of a series of monthly classes and counseling sessions over the academic year. The SBM program has been helping inform and prepare innovative Lincoln County business owners since 1991. Over the years, the SBM Alumni Learning Series has added occasional, enriching presentations and workshops to the core program. Both business owners and the general public get a chance to mix and learn about timely topics in fun and relaxed venues, free of charge. Our SBDC would like to recognize the continued support of the Mills family for life time learning by naming the life time learning series for Roger and Lois Mills.”
The first event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Nana’s Irish Pub. The event starts at 6 p.m. and features Onno Husing, Lincoln County Planning Director, and Caroline Bauman, Director of the Economic Development Alliance.
“The Mills family has generously supported business education in Lincoln County since the inception of the Small Business Development Center in 1986,”
said Ron Spisso, who has recently retired from full-time work at OCCC but still serves today as a half-time coordinator of the SBM program. “Roger and Lois Mills and their generous family have always supported our college’s growth. Roger’s son, Ty, representing Mills Ace Hardware, was one of the participants in the early years of the SBM program and he has carried on the tradition. Like his son, Roger was always ready to help other business owners with advice gained from his years of experience.”
In addition to his support of the SBDC and Oregon Coast Community College, Roger Mills assisted the county’s small business owners in many ways, and was a long-term SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) volunteer. Roger passed away in November, 2009.
The Small Business Development Center is pleased to honor all of the members of the Mills family for their continued success in business, for their service to our community, and for their generosity in helping to promote lifetime learning for Lincoln County’s entrepreneurs.
The inaugural Roger and Lois Mills Learning Series event begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21 at Nana’s Irish Pub in Newport. This informal and informative event is open to the community and current and former SBDC clients and program participants are encouraged to attend. Nana’s is located at 613 NW 3rd Street in Newport’s historic Nye Beach District.
