OCCC seeks to fill board vacancy for North County
Big things are happening at Oregon Coast Community College – and you may be able to play a key role in the future of this remarkable community resource. Due to the recent resignation of long-term board member Jim Nelson, who is moving to Central Oregon, the North County Zone 1 position is vacant on the college’s Board of Education. Citizens living in that zone are welcome to apply for the vacancy by Oct. 21. Zone 1 is encompasses the area of Lincoln County that starts at Neotsu and Rose Lodge north to Gleneden Beach, but does not include much of the city of Lincoln City.
“This is an especially exciting time for the OCCC Board of Education,” said OCCC board chair Chris Chandler. “OCCC has embarked on the seven-year journey towards independent accreditation and has set aggressive goals for growth of the institution and for improved and expanded programs designed to better serve the needs of the diverse communities in Lincoln County. Serving on this board is an opportunity to help shape the future of Oregon Coast Community College in very positive ways.”
To be considered for the vacancy, an applicant must be a registered voter, currently residing in Zone 1, and must have been a resident of the district for one year immediately preceding the appointment (ORS 332.018(2)). Pursuant to ORS 324.124, if no one applies from the vacant zone after the position is advertised for a 20-day period, an individual may be appointed from the district at large.
Citizens interested in serving the remainder of Nelson’s term, which is through June 30, 2017, are asked to apply with a letter of interest, noting their qualifications. Letters should be mailed to the administrative office of the Board of Education located at 400 SE College Way, Newport OR 97366 or Emailed to EA@occc.cc.or.us. Letters will be accepted until October 21, 2015. Further confirmation of Zone 1 boundaries can be obtained through contact with administration at 541-867-8532 or by contacting the Lincoln County Clerk’s office at 541-265-4131.
OCCC Board meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month in Newport, Lincoln City, or Waldport at 6:00 in the evening. Additional meetings are scheduled as needed. For more information, please visit http://www.oregoncoastcc.org/board-education.
