Surf rescue off Waldport. Coast Guard chopper summoned.
Reports from the scene say a man in a wetsuit was standing on the south bank of the Alsea River off Waziyata Avenue. Then he waded into the river and started swimming for the north bank. About half-way over he got swept downstream toward the jaws by the outgoing tide. Then he was gone.
Central Coast Fire-Rescue and Seal Rock jet ski searchers are combing the area trying to find him.
The Coast Guard Helo found him. Discussion about whether to set him down at the Port of Alsea or at Patterson Park. It sounds like he’s still alive.
Discussion now seems to be centered around the chopper landing at the old high school site and transferring him to an ambulance, if necessary.
Coast Guard Helo will set the swimmer down at the old high school where fire-rescue units are waiting.
Coast Guard Helo has headed north to PCH in Newport with the swimmer still aboard. One report from the scene is that although he was wearing a wetsuit, he was still in the water going on 90 minutes.
