Wednesday afternoon at about 3:40 PM, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report shots fired call near Highway 20 and Norman Road, immediately east of Newport.
The investigation revealed that Newport resident, Matthew Reel, 27, fired several shots from a handgun into a wooded area. The shots were determined to have been fired in an unsafe direction and came close to persons located in the immediate area. Officers at the time indicated they were looking for someone who had possibly been shot – possibly a transient.
During the investigation law enforcement became aware that a possible transient in the area may have been wounded and that a second subject may have been with the transient. But after an extensive search, no one was found in the area into which the shots were fired.
Reel was taken into custody for Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Reckless Endangering and Menacing, then transported to the Lincoln County Jail where he was lodged on $80,000 bail.
