From Oregon State Police-
This morning, just after 7am, OSP troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of a passenger vehicle versus a commercial vehicle on Highway 101 just south of Lincoln City.
Preliminary information revealed a 2007 Kenworth dump truck loaded with gravel, operated by Matthew NELSON, age 42, of Lincoln City, turned north onto Highway 101 near milepost 121. As the truck was accelerating, a northbound 2007 Saturn sedan collided with the back of the truck at highway speeds.
Emergency crews found the operator of the Saturn, Martin SAMPLE, age 53, of Lincoln City, deceased. Truck driver NELSON was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation. Initial investigation revealed there were no skid marks from SAMPLE’s vehicle showing he made no attempt to steer around the truck.
Editor’s note: There is a “no passing” double yellow line at the accident scene and the report did not reveal whether the truck driver gave the car driver enough time to brake or the estimated speed of the car driver.
There will no doubt be a follow up report from the OSP.
