Those aboard a 36 foot pleasure craft, trying to enter Yaquina Bay in the wee hours of Monday morning, misjudged the opening to the bay. The boat captain, thinking he was inside the jaws, motored east and eventually hit sand off the north jetty.
The Coast Guard says two men aboard jumped off and waded to shore. The boat’s name is the Shanti. There are several west coast boats with that same name. The Coast Guard says the boat is a total loss and will be salvaged on the beach.
Several weeks ago the captain of an older fishing vessel couldn’t figure out where he was either, and hit the end of the north jetty, the boat breaking up on the rocks.
Conditions early Monday morning were clear, visibility 6 nautical miles.
