Citizens of Waldport, veterans groups and a military attache conducted a full military honor guard memorial Saturday for Tech Sergeant Hugh Leslie Sherburn, who died when his aircraft was shot down over Laos in early 1969. Sgt. Sherburn was a member of a radio communications task force working to improve radio communications for U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War.
When his downed aircraft was later found, all those aboard had perished and their remains were scattered about the aircraft. Not being able to properly separate out the remains, the whole crew was buried in a communal grave at a military cemetery near St. Louis, Missouri.
But thanks to improved DNA analytics, the exact identities of the remains became known, and each set of remains have been repatriated to their home states.
Sgt. Sherburn’s remains were interred at the Alder Grove Cemetery in Waldport. His name has joined the others on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall on the cemetery grounds.
