A Newport man has died of injuries he suffered in a T-bone type crash Friday afternoon on 101 north of town. Newport Police report that George Lewis, Jr was turning southbound on 101 from NE 36th, when he apparently didn’t see a northbound vehicle bearing down on the intersection. Lewis’s Sentra was T-boned by a PT Cruiser, severely injuring Lewis. Driver of the PT Cruiser was not seriously injured.
Lewis was transported to PCH where he was prepared for an air ambulance transport to OHSU in Portland. Despite efforts to save his life, Lewis, 68, died of his injuries early Saturday morning.
Police say when looking to see if traffic is clear to turn, always take enough time to really see what is, or is not coming. Being in a hurry can be fatal.
