The Coast Guard says they got a radio distress call from the skipper of the F/V Sea Pup that he had fallen asleep and that his vessel ran into the rocks of Newport’s North Jetty.
The Coast Guard sent out a 47 foot motorlifeboat and launched Newport’s Coast Guard helo and discovered the wreckage right where the skipper said they’d find it. Conditions at the time were clear with winds at around 5-15 mph and seas at 3 feet. The helo and the motorlifeboat spotted the skipper on the jetty, walking between boulders after having successfully scampered off the Sea Pup.
The Sea Pup was a total loss. The Coast Guard says whatever is salvaged from her will soon be found on the beach of Yaquina Bay State Park, below the old lighthouse. The skipper told the Coast Guard that he fell asleep at the wheel coming in toward the jaws.
The Sea Pup was, for years, the main fishing boat for Ocean Bleu Seafoods on the Bayfront. An employee at Ocean Bleu indicated that although that was true for a long time, the Sea Pup was sold last year to another party and was no longer directly connected with Ocean Bleu.
