At about 7:17 AM Sunday, a Hyundai Santa Fe, driven by Randy D MANNS of Depoe Bay, was traveling eastbound on HWY 18, just west of McMinnville, and for unknown reasons, drifted off the highway into a ditch. MANNS over-corrected, traveling across the roadway and into the westbound lane where the Hyundai collided head-on with a westbound Yamhill County Sheriff’s patrol car driven by Deputy Dave MILLS of Sheridan.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged – the Hyundai bursting into into flame. Yamhill County Deputy Tim Casey and a citizen helped get MANNS out of his burning vehicle while OSP Senior Trooper Dan Davis and two other citizens put out the fire with fire extinguishers.
MANNS was airlifted to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland and Deputy MILLS was ground transported to a Salem Hospital. Both suffered serious injuries.
On scene evidence indicates that both occupants were wearing their seat belts. The exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
