From Leslie and Ken Hohstadt –
I have been thinking about change lately. How hard it is for some to accept. How hard it is for some to accomplish. How we should change the way we see, instead of the way we look. How some say you can’t change a leopards spots. I know there are those want to see change in our town. The way it looks. The way it’s ran. The store times. The hard times. Ghandi says ” Be the change you want to see”. How can we be the change? We can not do everything, right? The city manager said we have approximately 8000 people in Waldport and the surrounding area. So if even 1/10th of us did something, that would make a serious mark.
Did you know the chamber of commerce needs volunteers to fill positions to help their cause? You can contact the chamber directly or call the Interpretive center. Did you know South Lincoln County resources or even Seashore Family Literacy Center could use volunteers? Did you even know you can volunteer your time to help at the Moose Lodge for their fundraisers? See, my point is you don’t have to give money. You don’t even have to give a lot of time. Just a little something and the changes you would like to see can happen.
I know during the robberies of our local shops, we had so many people offer their time at 3am! Just to walk the streets and keep an eye on things. No, you don’t have to offer volunteering your time at 3am. But you can pick and choose what you would like to help with at your convenience. That is the beauty of it. Even just smiling at a stranger or saying hello can make a change. You can help spread a positive healthy attitude in your neighborhood and across the community. I promise, it is contagious!
And for those of you that are already practicing your contagious attitude or volunteering your time, THANK YOU! I know you are tired. I know you would like some extra help. Maybe someone will read this and say to themselves, “Self, it’s time to give a hand”.
If you want, you can even go to the Waldport Merchants meeting at City Hall on the first Thursday of July. It will be held in the council room at 6:30pm. Thank you City Manager Kerry Kemp for volunteering your meeting room. All merchants, small business, large business and even the curious are invited. You can also pop into your Moose Lodge and ask what you can do to help there too. They do so much for our community and you would be surprised at the very small group of folks that make all of it happen.
Hey! Why not call Kathy or one of the staff at Seashore or Shelter Me and see what you can provide or offer to them. You just might be surprised!
If you can’t help, or just don’t have the time or energy to volunteer or attend, be sure to at least support in spirit. Offer verbal support and defend those that are trying to help. Be their Stand Up person. So many times we hear negative talk about this person doing this or that person not doing that. How can that be turned positive? An unaccepting ear to the complaining, or just a simple reminder of what “those” people are doing that is good. Be the change. You have the power. Really. You do.
