Looks like Oregon will soon be among a handful of states with guaranteed paid sick leave in companies having at least 10 employees.
Declaring that lower wage workers deserve paid sick days for themselves or for taking care of their children, just like higher paid workers enjoy, is an issue of equity, fairness and human dignity, Senate Democrats passed mandatory paid sick day legislation for all Oregonians who work for a company with ten or more workers on the payroll. However, Republicans opposed the idea saying business can’t afford it and that the program could become rife with abuse. One Central Oregon Senator said “If it’s so important for Oregonians, let state government pay for it.”
