The Player Development Committee of Oregon PGA notified the local Chinook Winds Junior Golf program of the award of a $500 grant to support what the local group has been pursuing in player development. OPGA focuses on enhancing programs rather than fully funding them. In the grant letter, OPGA states, “We are pleased to support the work you are doing in player development and growing the game of golf in Oregon and SW Washington.
In 2015, Chinook Winds Resort in partnership with its Men’s and Women’s golf leagues will be sponsoring the Junior Golf Program for its 8th year at the Chinook Winds Golf Course. The local program focuses on providing golf equipment in the for the kids and providing them with instruction and exposure to the game of golf. “The program serves both girls and boys between the ages of 8-17.
PGA golf pros such as Larry Dealy, Todd Young and Rudy Frykberg have been instrumental along with members of the men’s and women’s golf leagues for adult supervision.” Dick Anderson, one of the original creators of the program said “We are pleased that the program has received this grant to further the success of the program.”
The participants are provided clubs, bags, collared shirts, golf balls and tees to learn the sport during the once a week classes for five weeks. This year, clubs will be turned back in at the end of the session but may be checked out any time the junior player comes to the course to play. Should a junior come out to play several times during the summer, the golf professional, at his discretion, may gift a set to the junior from the inventory of the Junior Golf Program.
This summer, classes will be held on June 16th, 23rd, 30th and July 7th and 14th from 5:30-7pm at Chinook Winds Golf Course. Cost for the program is $10 at the time of registration for the 5-week session. This year there is a bonus session for the 8-11 year olds accompanied by an adult or those 12 and over where they may then play the first four holes of the course after 7pm on class days. Also, juniors may play the course on any day with staff approval for $5 for 9 holes or $10 for 18 holes.
Registration is now available at the Chinook Winds Golf Course Pro Shop. The class will be limited to 30 juniors with a waiting list once the class if filled. For more information, Call Dick Anderson at 541-996-8482 or stop by the Pro Shop.
