When Toledo Mayor Billie Jo Smith learned that the Monsanto herbicide Roundup was scheduled to be used in a vegetation project at Mill Creek, she approached her city council and laid out her concerns about it. She told them that although there are disagreements as to the herbicide’s toxicity, many quite reputable world health organizations see the chemical as cancer causing – said to be even a possible cause of Parkinson’s Disease.
After some debate back and forth the council decided to instruct city staff to not use Roundup in the Mill Creek project. City Manager Jay Baughman said that leaving out the herbicide changes the funding situation for the project but not by much -$8,000 additional to have the vegetation issue handled by hand. He said by changing some minor aspects of the grant given to the city for the project, the funding provisions should be properly re-adjusted fairly soon. And it will allow the hand removal of the vegetation without the use of the herbicide.
