Get hooked on a new favorite pastime. The public is invited to join Siuslaw National Forest staff and agency partners Saturday, June 6, or Sunday, June 7, for free fishing day activities. Event organizers will be on hand to offer advice and assistance to novice and experienced anglers alike. Fishing poles, gear and bait also will be available to share, if needed.
· Hebo Lake (Hebo): 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 6. The event features give-away items, door prizes and a kids’ casting contest. Day-use fees for the Hebo Lake recreation area also will be waived.
· Oregon Hatchery Research Center (Alsea): 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 6. The center will be open for tours and exhibits. A shuttle will take anglers from the center to Thissel Pond to fish. On-site concessions will be available, as well as an appearance by Smokey Bear.
· Cleawox Lake (Honeyman State Park, Florence): 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 6. Kids will have the opportunity to make fish print T-shirts, receive a free hot dog lunch and possibly win door prizes. Volunteers will be available to help clean the fish caught.
· Lake Marie (Umpqua Lighthouse State Park, Reedsport): 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 7. Casting contest and free hot dog lunch for kids, as well as a fishing lure raffle.
The free fishing weekend is an Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife initiative to introduce children and beginners to the sport of fishing. Fishing licenses are not required for the weekend; however, all other Oregon Fish and Wildlife fishing regulations apply.
