The Port of Astoria’s sea lion population has exploded to where it overflows their docks. No room for boats. They’ve tried shooing them away, making noise, even tried electrified mats. But nothing’s worked.
But this week the port got a call from a guy in Bellingham that saw the story in their local newspaper and offered to help out. He’s Terry Buzzard and he has a 32′ Orca replica he uses in parades to promote his business. He said maybe the fiberglass replica of a Killer Whale might make the sea lions scram. The port said, “Can’t hurt to try.” So Buzzard is bringing it down.
If it works in Astoria, Port of Newport General Manager Kevin Greenwood might want to check in to it. The port’s resorted to paint ball guns, to the consternation of some folks, to keep docks along the Bayfront as sea lion free as possible.
