When students at Siletz Valley School climb the steps at the school bell in the fall of 2017, the “Warriors” sign out front will be notably absent. The Oregon Board of Education, after months of back and forth deliberations decided Friday that the use of Native American terms for school mascots and sports teams is degrading, demeaning and the source of unwarranted shame, if not identity theft of a people already struggling from the lingering social, political and economic wounds from being conquered, displaced and discriminated against.
And because Siletz Valley School is a public school, not just a charter school, it too will have to give up it’s “Warrior” mascot/nickname as of July 1, 2017.
