From Lt. Jamie Russell – Lincoln County Jail Commander
Over the past few months the Lincoln County jail staff, in coordination with Jail Counselor Dennis Buckmaster and community volunteers, have been providing yoga classes to female inmates. The goal of this program is to decrease their stress levels as well as lower the incidence of violence and offender conflict within the jail.
Over the course of the program, 29 female inmates participated in 129 hours of class time with yoga instructors. In that period of time reports of incidents involving female inmates was reduced by 4.6% compared to the three month period before programming began.
With the success of the first round of yoga classes, the jail will be providing this class to male inmates as well as female inmates in the near future.
Lest you think this is some kind of a weak-headed approach to jail discipline and the maintenance of law and order behind the jail walls, prison yoga has been spreading widely across the country and it’s been proven to be quite effective. Google ‘prison yoga’ and you’ll see how widely it’s being accepted as a valuable component to providing safer jail environments. Click here.
