Two Central Oregon young men were out swimming off Patterson State Beach Thursday afternoon when they got sucked outbound in a rip current which carried them out quite a ways. Observers on the beach called 9-1-1 and activated a local surf rescue team response.
Yachats Fire Chief Frankie Petrick and her crew headed north and were soon on scene. Fortunately there was someone on the beach that the victims could see and obey his arm motions to get back in toward shore. The two were led a quarter mile back north toward Patterson where they were met with a quick evaluation by Chief Petrick. Chief Petrick talked with them to ensure they were not hypothermic. You can see that their skin was still pretty pink even after the long walk back that allowed them to warm up a little.
Chief Petrick turned ’em loose and then got back to work helping her crew navigate a log, buried in the sand, that their response rig had tangled with.
Whether on her farm or on an emergency response, a Lady Fire Chief’s work is never done.
