Firefighters in Newport are involved in a series of Learn to Burn exercises where property owners get their run-down properties demolished for very low cost while members of regional fire departments get free “live fire” fire fighting experience without having to drive a third of the way across the state to get it.
Other Learn to Burn drills are occurring and there are plans for more in the future.
The basic drill is to remove the toxic all toxic materials in the building walls, roofs and fixtures. Then for the better part of a day small fires will be deliberately set inside confined areas. The fires will erupt – one team of trainees go in under tight supervisions to practise what they learned in the classroom. Then when all the interior fire fighting techniques are thoroughly gone through they torch the rest of the building in a giant bonfire.
After the building is consumed the building owner arranges for the ash and unburned materials to be hauled away to a landfill.
Again, firefighters get live fire training and the property owner gets a cheap building demolition.
