Each May, the Administration for Community Living celebrates Older Americans Month to recognize older Americans for their contributions to the nation. This year, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act (OAA), we are focusing on how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact in the lives of others. The theme for Older Americans Month 2015 is Get into the Act.
Pictured are Vada Robinson and Donna Fogarty accepting the proclamation for Older Americans Month that was presented by Sandra Roumagoux, Mayor of the City of Newport, at the May 4th council meeting.
Older Americans Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of community engagement as a tool for enhancing the well being of older adults. Now is the time to Get into the Act to make the benefits of community living a reality for more older Americans. Together we can promote healthy aging, increase community involvement for older adults, and tackle important issues like the prevention of elder abuse.
We invite you to GET INTO THE ACT and explore the 60+ center both in person and by visiting our web site at www.newportoregon.gov/sc. The center has a wide variety of activities that promote healthy lifestyles. The health and wellness studio has classes that are designed for beginning to moderate fitness levels. Classes include Tai Chi, Arthritis exercise, and Better Bones and Balance.
Other educational classes that have been approved by the National Council on Aging are, Matter of Balance (8 week) from OHSU, Walk with Ease (6week) from Arthritis Foundation and Living well with Chronic Conditions (6 week) from Stanford.
Recently the 60+ center was approved as a Silver Sneaker site. We have trained leaders in the “fun” Silver sneakers classes that include Circuit, Classic and Yoga. We are currently running the classic classes. We also have been approved for silver and fit. Check with your insurance company to see if you qualify. Get into the act this year and join in at the Newport 60+ center.
