The Lincoln County Education Association (LCEA) endorses Clary Grant’s candidacy for Lincoln County School Board Position #2
I am Clary Grant and I am running for the Lincoln County School District Board of Directors position #2. My husband, Jerome, and I own and operate Gracie’s Sea Hag, in Depoe Bay. Not only did I attend Lincoln County schools, my daughter, having started kindergarten at Mary Harrison in Toledo, graduated from Newport High in 2014. Being involved at the classroom level with my child during the last 12 years will aid me in understanding the needs of our students and teachers today.
I want to be a listening ear and a new voice for parents, teachers and the community. I am concerned about the direction our school district is headed and I believe we need new leadership on the school board. There is a top down approach to leadership in our district. I’ve heard from teachers, parents and the community that micro- management in the classroom is a serious problem. Teachers are being told what and how to teach instead of allowing them some professional freedom.
Our teachers are professionals, most having Masters Degrees, yet they are not given enough opportunity to be innovative in the classroom because of the top down leadership in conjunction with excessive testing. Excessive testing takes instruction time and creativity out of the classroom. Testing is stressful and our children are becoming data, not individuals.
As a school board member I will communicate with the people I represent. I believe the school board should work closely with the parents, teachers, and the administration to foster and create a sense of community. We need people working together and listening to each other. We have great teachers, concerned parents, and a supportive community.
I will not be a rubber stamp for policies that are not in the best interests of our students, teachers and community.
I’m asking for your vote to represent us on the school board.
Change is needed, vote for Clary Grant!
