A Yamhill-Carlton runner is safe at the plate after jarring the ball loose from Newport catcher Emma Paranto on Friday in an Oregon West Conference home game.

Two bang-bang plays at the plate separated Newport High from sole possession of first place in the Oregon West Conference on Friday.

Two potential putouts – one that resulted in a ball jarred form the catcher’s mitt; and another declared a run on a call so close it could have gone either way — stood between the Lady Cubs and an undefeated league record in a 5-4 defeat to longtime nemesis Yamhill-Carlton.

The Newport High softball team (17-2 overal, 8-1 Oregon West) lost a showdown with the visiting Tigers (17-2, 9-0) here Friday, falling behind early and rallying to within a run before losing the game and first place to Yamhill-Carlton.

“We just ran out of outs today,” Newport Coach Mark Schiewe said.
