Info from Bike Newport-
Proceeds from the event supports youth programs at the Newport Recreation Center. It allows children from low income households the opportunity to participate in a number of fantastic recreation programs.
Our race poster has the names of Ben Eder and Mike Bowers mingled in the artwork as Ben Eder was a student at Newport High who helped start this race with his teacher, Dave Campbell and Mike Bowers of Savory Cafe. Mike was a big supporter of this race by bringing pizza out to all the riders for the last 3 years. We honor both of these great local community members who have passed on.
Wilder Newport graciously allows the race to take place on their beautiful lands adjacent to Oregon Coast Community College. The Newport Chamber of Commerce and The Newport News Times are other large supporters of this event. Food for all racers is provided by Chowder Bowl, drinks provided by BigFoot Beverages, and beer garden is sponsored by Rogue, Big Foot Beverages, and Bier One. A taco truck will also be on site.
We offer a “Grommet” race for kids 8-12 years old to do a 2.5 mile timed loop on part of the race course. Kids must wear helmet and register to race in the Grommet division. We’ll also have free bike races for little one’s under 8 years old. Kids need a bike and a helmet. Free kids races will start between 11:30-12PM.
A fun event to race in and watch. Bring the kids and help support our local community. The Big Race starts Sunday, 10am.
