Michael Gibbons is the featured artist May 2 & 3 in the 1st Weekend Toledo Art monthly event. “Wild Garden” (the last in this series of themed 1st Weekend events) was chosen by the artist who paints regularly in
gardens, both wild and tame. “View in Stanford Gardens” painted by the artist in Mendocino ala prima (outdoors on site) in a brief 3 hours as the sun slowly descended, captures the golden glow that bathes the entire area. Soft lines and rich colors including the house used as an architectural feature make up this typical “Gibbons” landscape scene.
The gardens in the Inn were originally formed years ago when Japanese workers developed truck gardens in order to sell produce to the townspeople. The Stanford Inn owners have continued the growing process by planting flowers and vegetables that are used daily in their vegan restaurant. Gibbons was mentoring a large group of painters associated with the Mendocino Art Center at the time he made this painting and was actually surrounded by students all working on variations of this same site. “I tried to capture the heavy warm atmosphere of the afternoon typified by the haze of coastal sea air that Mendocino is so famous for”, said Michael Gibbons and “I have encountered 2 bears painting en plein air and a number of experiences of which I will be pleased to share a few with visitors to my gallery Saturday and Sunday at 1:00pm.”
1st Weekend Toledo Art has morphed over the years into a monthly event followed closely by art enthusiasts who are eager to see what’s new by a favorite artist (or gallery ). This loosely organized event by a group of
gallery/studio members and artists is proving to be a popular activity every month. Participating locations host some type of event such as an art demo, artist’s talk, music, wine for FREE which keeps the event fresh and ensures that each 1st Weekend is unique.
