NEWPORT — Taft High senior ace Katie McCardell rebounded from a rare off outing in grand fashion here Saturday, throwing a five-hit shutout and hitting a two-run home run to lead the Tigers to a 3-0 softball victory over No. 1-ranked and previously unbeaten Newport.
McCardell, who suffered a 15-5 home defeat to Dayton four days earlier in Taft’s Class 3A West Valley League debut, rebounded in perhaps her finest hour in a stellar four-year varsity career. The Tigers’ victory over rival Newport reportedly was its first in 10 years over the Cubs, who shared Class 4A conference affiliation with Taft for much of that time.
