A Newport Police Officer was on patrol Sunday evening driving north across the Yaquina Bay Bridge when he decided to run the plate of a vehicle in front of him -a green 1994 Toyota Tercel. The registration returned to a reported stolen vehicle from Klamath County, in south-central Oregon.
The officer quickly radioed to other law enforcement in the area that he needed back-up to perform a traffic stop on the car. Other officers from the Newport Police Department, with assistance from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oregon State Police converged on the stolen car in the 400 Block of SW Coast Highway, right downtown. They surrounded the car with guns drawn.
The vehicle’s occupants, Robert P. Smyth, age 39 of South Beach, and Oscar Pacheco-Parra, age 32, hometown unknown, were taken into custody without incident. Both subjects were also found to be in possession of methamphetamines. Smyth and Pacheco-Para were transported to the Lincoln County Jail where they were lodged without incident. Their bail was set at $100,000 each.
