As the Kitzhaber-Hayes investigation moves ahead, facts that emerge can cast shadows or bright lights on former Governor John Kitzhaber, but also on his staff who were tap dancing as fast as they could, no doubt, to either please their boss(es) in good faith or for something less. It’s far too early to know beyond the small circle of investigators who are watching all this from front row seats.
In the meantime, Kitzhaber, as well as those staffers, who have technically done nothing wrong until proven culpable, are deserving of state taxpayer paid-for legal counsel to ensure their civil rights are protected during the investigation. There’s a cap on those attorney fees if issues lean toward criminal issues – no cap it they’re skewing civil.
